After more than 25 years in the Boston area my husband Mark and I decided to make a big change and relocate to Madison, WI. Why? We were very happy where we were and had thought we would live in Littleton, MA for the rest of our lives, or at least until our girls left the nest. We had great friends, a wonderful community, fantastic neighbors and good jobs. Then he was offered a position in Madison. We went out to visit and were intrigued. People spoke about what a great city Madison is, how family friendly it is, how much there is to do, how much they love it. We met people who had moved there planning to stay for a few years and ended up loving it and are still there 25 years later. We met people who lived there, moved around the world and came back because it’s so special. That says a lot. We went home and thought about it and asked our girls what they thought. They were both open to a new adventure. We decided to take the plunge.
There were lots of second thoughts from all of us along the way. Why are we doing this? Is this the right decision? Are we crazy? What are we doing?
In the end it was a leap of faith. We knew a new opportunity beckoned and we had to try it out. We will always have Littleton and our beloved memories there but it felt right to try something else, expand our horizons, test our skills somewhere else.
It’s scary but also exhilarating. It’s taking us out of our comfort zone. As much as the globalization in our society has shrunk the world there is still a lot to learn in an area 1000 miles from where you have called home for so long. This blog is an attempt to relate those experiences and share some of the feelings of exploring a new place.
